A Highway in the Wilderness

by ezekiel olukolajo

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. Isaiah 40:3-5;

For every individual, going through life is like traveling through a wilderness, and this is because every one of us is traveling a road no one else has traveled before; it therefore rests directly on each of us to personally navigate our own paths to fulfillment of our destinies. No one can live a meaningful life unless he or she is able to successfully find his or her ways through the wilderness of life. To navigate the ship through the vast ocean, a sailor cannot do without the compass; to pilot the airplane through the mighty clouds, the captain cannot do without the map; to find your way through the wilderness of life, you can never do without the Almighty God who alone can create an expressway in the wilderness!

The paths through the wilderness are usually rough, thorny, crooked and full of obstacles. A lot of people have been experiencing stagnation for years and have recorded little or no progress because there are obstacles on their ways. It is not God’s desire that His people roam aimlessly or get lost in the wilderness of life which is the reason why He has promised to open up a highway for you through the wilderness. A highway is an expressway which allows you to travel with great speed and cover far distance within a very short time. When God intervenes in the affairs of your life and creates a highway in the wilderness, you will certainly overtake everyone who had left you behind; you are bound to make rapid progress and accomplish within a very short time, what takes others decades to achieve!

A wilderness is a very thick forest with no clear walk paths, definite tracks or directional signposts, which makes it very easy for any traveler to be completely lost. It must be clearly stated that no one can successfully travel through life or reach the desired destination without the leading of the Almighty God who alone knows the ways through the wilderness. Our crucial need for God as the way maker was demonstrated when the children of Israel took their journey to the Promised Land through the wilderness. God’s presence in form of pillar of clouds by day and pillar of fire by night stood by them throughout the journey and this enabled them to find the way and move on even in the face of severe challenges. Jesus Christ says ‘I am the way, the truth and the life’, it’s only those who have submitted themselves to the lordship and leadership of Christ that can count on Him to lead them in the unfamiliar terrains of the wilderness of life.

God is known for making ways where there’s no way, but you are required to put your faith to work. If you refuse to take a step of faith, God will not move on your behalf. For instance, God did not open up the red sea until the children of Israel actually stepped into the waters! If you sit down and wait for the situations to improve before you make a move, you cannot expect God to open up the roads or move on your behalf. One surest way we can demonstrate our faith in God is to push against all barriers that are standing on our ways with courage. We are not expected to turn or look back in the face of oppositions and adversities, those who turn their backs can never experience limitless power of God which makes a way where there’s no way.

It is exciting to know that once God opens up a highway in the wilderness of your life, the time has come for your glory to shine forth, you will be announced! Just like God used John the Baptist to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus Christ, God has prepared certain people as instruments to pave way for the fulfillment of your destiny in life. After John the Baptist had prophetically prepared the way, the Lord Jesus Christ needed only three and a half years of ministry to accomplish the eternal purpose of salvation, so also, when God begins to work through the human instruments He has ordained to clear the way for you, your progress will be rapid, your glory will arise!

Dearly beloved, thus saith the LORD, ‘Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19.
