500 years of the Reformation - Luther City Wittenberg celebrates the great Reformation-Jubilee

In the Jubilee year 2017, the Lutherstadt Wittenberg celebrates these 500 years of the Reformation with ecclesiastical and cultural events, conferences and large exhibitions. Martin Luther lived and worked here, on October 31, 1517, he thrown his 95 theses against the abuse of the indulgences to the door of the castle church at Wittenberg, thereby changing not only the church world, but also a reformation in politics, economics and science , Art and culture.

In Wittenberg there are a number of sights worth seeing in the year of the Reformation Jubilee but also after 2017.

Of particular tourist interest are of course the Luther_Memorial, some of which even belong to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. You can immerse yourself in the history of the city at the original sites of the Reformation. Visit the Church, where Luther took his 95 theses, or the city church of St. Mary, where he preached for 30 years. In the Luther-house you will find the largest reformation-historical museum in the world, and in the Melanchthon-house the life of the "Teacher of Germany" is brought to you. Also in the Cranach Courtyards you can find evidence of the Reformation, for example in the historical printing shop, where Cranach reproduced the Reformation ideas for the public. Of the historic buildings of the Wittenberg university "Alma Mater Leucorea", on which also Martin Luther taught, today only the Augusteum exists. However, the LEUCOREA Foundation has succeeded in opening up a campus for learning and research in Wittenberg after many years. In the renovated Friedricianum, various sections and centers of the MartinLuther University Halle-Wittenberg are located.

But even outside the Reformation Wittenberg has a moving history behind it. If you are interested in the sights of Wittenberg's younger history, the Piesteritzer Werkssiedlung is worth a visit. From 1916 onwards, the "Working Living Area" is the first and largest auto- motive residential settlement in Germany. Enjoy the beautifully landscaped gardens and the peculiar architecture of these buildings. For architectural enthusiasts, the Hundred Water School, which is home to the Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium, is certainly worth a visit. The building was completely rebuilt in the nineties according to the plans of the Austrian artist. The most recent sight of the city is the Luther - Garden, where a total of 500 trees are planted from all continents until the Reformation Jubilee 2017.
 From October 2016 the Luther city Wittenberg with the Reformation panorama "Luther 1517" of Yadegar Asisi a further sight for the next 5 years. The panorama gives visitors an impression of the events initiated by the monk and scholar Martin Luther 500 years ago with his thesis in Wittenberg, depicted on 15 x 75 meters of canvas.

Reformation Summer 2017

On the occasion of the 500th Reformation Jubilee in 2017, the German Protestant Church Congress offers Christians and Christian women of all confessional conventions from all over the world a colorful program for watching, listening and participating. On 31st October 2016 the start of the jubilee year will be given. By the summer of 2017 various events on Luther and Reformation will be held. A highlight of the Reformation celebrations is the 36th German Evangelical Church Day in Berlin and Wittenberg from the 24th to the 28th. May 2017.

The "Chruchday" in Berlin and Wittenberg The Protestant Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Oberlausitz and the Protestant Church in Central Germany are the organizers of the church day and organize a variety of programs for interested parties. From Wednesday, May 24, 2017 until Sunday, May 28, 2017, more than 2,000 different individual events will be held for the Chruchday. The main venue for these dates will be Berlin, with an event center being set up in Wittenberg. To the Kirchentag are offered special trains, which bring the visitors in only 50 minutes from Berlin to Wittenberg.

The focus of the German Evangelical Church Day 2017 is on topics that meet the Time ghost. In this way, discussions about international ecumenism as well as interreligious dialogue will take place in panel discussions, disputes, lectures and workshops. Also the view forward is dared by asking how the evangelical faith can contribute to a better future in the next 500 years. In the process, well-known speakers are expected to attend these topics in a dialogue with the visitors.  

Six church days in eight cities

With the Chruchday on the way, the organizers of the German Evangelical Church Days have thought up something very special for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. From 24 to 27 May 2017 you can find information about Luther and the Reformation in eight Middle-German cities. The cities of Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt, Jena / Weimar, Dessau-Roßlau, Halle (Saale) / Lutherstadt Eisleben offer various program points that reflect the identity and history of each city. All cities have a special relationship with Luther or the Evangelical Church. A real highlight will be the ecumenical worship of Christ's Ascension, taking place in all cities at the same time on 24.05.2017, which is a symbolic bridge between the cities of Churchdays along the way, as well as the church day in Berlin and Wittenberg.

Concluding festivities in Wittenberg 2017

Also to the festive conclusion of the Protestant church day on Sunday, 28 May 2017 it goes to Wittenberg. In front of the gates of Luthercity, a feast service takes place at 12 noon, which will deal with the Reformation and the topics of the church day. With the panorama of the city in the background, in which Luther had thrown his 95 theses to the church, and thereby decisively contributed to the historical changes of the Church all over the world, faith was celebrated and thanked God for his grace.

After the service, there will be a meeting at the worship service, where the participants can discuss further and look into the future.  


World Exhibition Reformation - Gates of Freedom

The gates of the town of Wittenberg to the world exhibition Reformation are opened at seven locations along the ramparts. Seven so-called "Gates of Freedom" invite visitors from 20.05. Until 10.09.2017 to deal with the church, its faith and the present situation of the world. Each "gate" has a specific thematic area that includes information, musical performances, plays, lectures and discussions. A theme area will be covered in each of the 16 theme weeks. The opening is a festive week, which includes the Churchdays on the way and the German Evangelical Church Day in Berlin and Wittenberg.
